Óleo sobre tabla con el tema luterano de la Antigua y la Nueva Ley. María, arrodillada en el monte Sión, inaugura la era de la GRATIA al recibir a Cristo que desciende desnudo y con cruz en Tau, envuelto en una aureola luminosa.

Holbein abordó el mismo tema de la Ley y el Evangelio en el grabado del frontispicio de la
Biblia Coverdale (1535), pero en este caso la antítesis tipológica de la entrega de la Ley a Moisés es la predicación de Cristo a las multitudes.
