El Spieghel historiael de Jacob van Maerlant es una adaptación al flamenco del Speculum historiale, de Vincent de Beauvais (véase FICHA nº 12: https://juliomontanes.synology.me/bases/textos/?-table=textos&-action=browse&-cursor=0&Numero=12), realizada entre 1282/83 y el fallecimiento del autor hacia 1300. Del Speculum toma Maerlant el exemplum de Tutivillus anotando las "vanidades e infidelidades" de dos mujeres, al cual sitúa como el de Beauvais en una iglesia de Toledo ("Tote Toletten, in waren saken"), mencionando también el pergamino estirado con los dientes (Partie I, nº XC: Vanden clerc die den duvel scriven sach).
