El denominado Lambeth Apocalypse, por el lugar en el que hoy se conserva, fue realizado para Lady Eleanor de Quincy, condesa de Winchester, probablemente hacia 1260 y, en todo caso, antes de su matrimonio con Roger de Leybourne en 1267. Contiene el texto latino del Apocalipsis con comentarios de Berengaudus y miniaturas, tanto referidas al texto como relativas a la vida de San Juan e imágenes devocionales.

Camille y Clanchy han destacado que en ellas se refleja claramente la importancia que la escritura y la abogacía adquirieron en la sociedad gótica, y la consideración de los demonios como gramáticos y escritores. En efecto, en varias escenas aparecen demonios escritores (uno de ellos representado como un clérigo tonsurado, sentado escribiendo a los pies de un Lucifer entronizado), los condenados arden en el infierno con los libros que contienen sus pecados (fol. 37r, Foto 2), la condesa se presenta ante la Virgen mostrando su Libro de la vida (fol. 40r, Foto 2), y, tanto en el Pacto de Teófilo como en el rescate de Teófilo del Infierno, los demonios exhiben cartas plomadas como las que eran habituales en la cancillería real inglesa de Enrique III y Eduardo I [1].

En palabras de M. T. Clanchy: “the devil not only became literate in the thirteenth century … he also established a hellish bureaucracy to match that of the king or the pope”.

[1] En la escena del Infierno aparece también un demonio tocando el cuerno sobre la Boca infernal como en otras representaciones en las que el demonio ha sido identificado como Tutivillus (fol. 47r, Foto 1), siendo éste uno de los primeros casos de su aparición.
